Even billionaires like Mark Cuban go to the witty “Shark Tank” star Barbara Corcoran for guidance.

The real estate tycoon, though, admits that she wasn’t always confident, particularly given her dyslexia as a child.

According to Corcoran, who appeared on the Diary of a CEO podcast, “Everything I’ve done in my life has been one long attempt to show the world that I’m not stupid. If I wasn’t dyslexic and I didn’t have a hard time in school, I don’t think I would have been successful, believe it or not.”

Even when she doubted herself, Corcoran learned to utilize the doubts of others as fuel for her own confidence. When she was in a “insecure situation,” she used positive affirmations instead of critical self-talk.

In her words, we should “replace the tape” when it comes to how we talk about ourselves.
“It takes a lot to get over the damage done if your self-perception is a negative one from the get-go,” Corcoran told the audience.

Of course, Corcoran founded The Corcoran Group, one of the most prosperous real estate firms in the world. She has also contributed millions to the enterprises of entrepreneurs.
