What are the risks and benefits of fat transfer to my breasts?
While there are multiple ways that surgeons have tried to augment the breast, three types are most commonly used, the breast implant, using your own fat through fat transfer, and local tissue rearrangements to fill the breast. Today, we will discuss the benefits and risks a fat transfer.
Fat transfer involves removal of fat tissue and cells from one part of your body through liposuction, and injecting it into a different tissue of your body, such as the breast, to improve the size or contour. The fat has to be injected in layers in between the cells of the recipient area, such as the breast, so that the blood vessels from the breast grow into the fat that is being added. In this way, the fat that is injected can become permanent and live in the breast.
When using fat transfer to improve the size and shape of the breast, there are three main advantages. First, the fat is from your own body and will never be rejected or need to be replaced. Second, as your weight changes over time, the breast will grow or shrink so that the overall proportion of your body will stay the same with regard to your breasts. Lastly, fat transfer to the breast provides a very natural and soft shape to your breast so that it will feel like it’s a part of you. Unlike implants, the fat will never need to be replaced or rupture or have other problems.
However, breast augmentation with fat transfer can have its drawbacks. Firstly, there is a limited amount of fat that can be injected. Usually, you can’t increase the size more than 2 cups sizes. Compared to an implant, the breast do not have the “pop” look that some patients desire. Secondly, about 30% of the fat that is transferred dies. When this fat dies, he can leave behind oil cysts, fat necrosis, or hard lumps that you will be able to feel. Sometimes, these need to be evaluated by ultrasound or a mammogram to make sure that they are indeed fat necrosis. Lastly, if you gain a significant amount of weight, then your breasts will become very large as the fat cells store the fat.
When making decisions about plastic surgery, it is very important to see a board certified plastic surgeon so that they can help guide you in determining what option is best to fit your desired contour and your body type.
