Four hospitalized people with injuries due to the collapse of the ceiling in a nightclub in the Dominican Republic died during the night, which increased the number of dead to at least 225, health officials said on Saturday.
Fifteen of the more than 200 injured remain hospitalized, including five in critical condition, authorities said. A total of 189 people were rescued from the debris of the popular night -club jet in the capital of Santo Domingo.
The Minister of Health, Victor Attalah, told reporters on Saturday that there was a delay in identifying the victims because most of them had to coincide with biometric data.
The athletes, the politicians and a fashion designer in favor of sports were among those inside the Tesday nightclub when their roof collapsed in the middle of the performance of the popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez, causing a 53 -hour search and rescue mission.
Among the confirmed dead are Pérez, the former World Series champion Octavio Dotel and the former Baseball player of the Major Leagues Tony Blanco, father of the current prospect of the Pittsburgh pirates, Tony Blanco Jr.,
Dotel, who began his career as a prospect of the METS and also played with the Yankees, won a ring with the St. Louis cardinals in 2011. Blanco Mr. Letterly played for Washington’s nationals.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the province of Montecristi and sister of the seven -time baseball star Nelson Cruz, alerted the Dominican president Luis Abinader about the disaster, calling him from under the rubble.
The authorities said Nelsy Cruz then died in a hospital.
Other victims include a retired official from the UN, New York fashion designer Martín Polanco, an army captain who left four young people and three employees in a popular group, a financial services company, including the president of AFP Popular and His.
The flags in the City Council of New York and other buildings owned by the city were reduced on Saturday in response to the tragic collapse of this week’s ceiling.
Mayor Eric plans to travel to the Dominican Republic on Sunday with the New York Transportation Commissioner, Yanis Rodríguez, who is Dominican, where they will give him his respect.
