The Amador County Sheriff, Gary Redman, became a little controversy this year when he openly said that he would steal a California law that limits cooperation between local and federal authorities.
Citing his duty to enforce public security in his rural county located 135 miles east of San Francisco, Redman is still the only Sheriff in the state that has promised to challenge the 2017 state law of Sanctuary of California, also known Valuornia Valuornia Valuornia Valuornia Valuornia Valuornia Valuornia.
More specifically, Redman said that he will communicate with the application of immigration and customs (ICE) of us when he is aware that a person in local custody is illegally in the country and raises a serious threat of public security.
“It’s almost [like] We are going to vicorce the victim again. That is what I see with this law, “Redman told Fox News Digital.” How can you tell me that I have someone who is illegally in the country … and returns them to society when they committed an atrocious crime? “
“You are making me make that decision. Well, I’m just not willing to do it because I was chosen to be the Sheriff of Amador County, where public security is my no. 1 priority,” he added.
The vote goes against SB 54, which allows local authorities to contact ICE only when an illegal immigrant is convicted of certain crimes and is about to be released from custody.
State legislators approved the duration of the law, Trump’s first administration in an effort to ensure that the local police are not used to help immigration officials.
Fox News Digital has communicated with the American Union of Civil Liberties (ACLU), several immigrant rights groups, Amador County and Republican and Democratic parties throughout the State, and the Governor’s Office for Comments on the matter.
“I worked in the justice system for years and I saw how weak laws put the public in danger,” said the president of the California Republican Party, Corrin Rankin, Fox News Digital. “What we are listening to the Sheriff Redman is what many in the application of the law say for a long time: the California Sanctuary State makes it more difficult to stop violent criminals.”
“The Democrats in Sacramento approved these laws knowing that they join the hands of the sheriffs and the police. When local officials see a threat, they should be able to act,” Rankin added.
About 6% of the 42,000 Amador County residents are born abroad, according to US census data.
Despite the low figure, Asian gangs with illegal immigrants have established marijuana cultivation in the area, said Redman.
“That’s what we deal with in the last 10 years,” said Redman.
The Sheriff announced its position on the law of the sanctuary in a press release from February published on the Facebook page of the Sheriff’s Office of the Amador County in response to persistent questions of the residents about how their office would manage the duration of the affairs of Secident.
While other sheriffs throughout the state have said they will work on SB 54, Redman’s announcement is different in what makes it clear that he knows that he will violate state law. That has put it at the starting door of the Office of the Attorney General of California.
California Attorney General, Rob Bonta, has pledged to protect immigrant communities in the state by defending SB 54, despite the fact that detractors point out that it allows criminal immigrants to walk the streets and a possible recidivism.
In an email to Fox News Digital, Bonta’s office indicated that federal courts have ruled that the State Sanctuary Law does not conflict with federal law.
“The Attorney General is committed to protecting and guaranteeing the rights of the immigrant communities of California and defending vital laws such as SB 54, which ensure that state and local resources are destined to combat crime in the communities of California, they achieved it.”
“The federal courts have exceeded SB 54 and have found that not being in conflict with federal law (the opinion of the ninth circuit 2019 is attached as a reference),” said his office. “We are closely monitoring compliance with the application of the law with SB 54”.
The representative Kevin Kiley, Republican of California, who recently introduced federal legislation that would allow local authorities who wish to cooperate with the federal immigration application to do so independently of any state law, cited from Mexico.
In 2022, ICE asked to be notified by the release of Mora from prison after his trial for assaulting a California road patrol officer. The Merced County Sheriff’s office had Mora in custody and received an ICE application to stop him, but Mora was released due to the Sanctuary Law, said the sheriff’s office.
Then he killed his three daughters inside a church in Sacramento, as well as a chaperone who was supervising his visit with the children, before preventing his own life.
“There is no doubt in my mind that if I could cooperate with ICE, this tragedy could have avoided,” said Merced Vernon County Sheriff in a statement at that time. “According to the current law, the hands of the police nationwide are linked to policies that have a significant impact on our communities and their quality of life.”
“The sanctuary law is completely indefensible,” Kiley told Fox News Digital. “He has led many, many tragedies throughout the state. It is one of the reasons why California has been the worst problem of illegal immigration.
He added that the law was “legally doubtful” in the sense that Iteks will violate federal law.
Redman, who grew up in the progressive County of Los Angeles, said that partially came out publicly with his position on the Sanctuary Law due to the Trump administration and his willingness to defend local officials who work with ICE.
“I’ve always felt this way, but there was a chante in hell, I was going to say this under the Biden administration,” said Redman. “I did not trust the attorney general at that time. I did not trust the Biden administration for coming after me. Absolutely, I don’t think that happens under the Trump administration.”
Among the Sheriffs of California, Redman, who is considered a moderate Republican, is alone.
The Sheriff of the County of Riverside, Chad Bianco, which is postulated to become the next governor of California, has advocated to abolish the sanctuary state policies and demand that the local police cooperate with the federal immigration authorities.
In addition to Redman, two cities in California, Huntington Beach and Oroville, non -sanctioning cities have been challenged. In Amador County, almost 49% of voters are registered Republicans, eclipsing the 27% align with the Democrats, Chordination to the Office of the Secretary of State of California.
That could be a reason why a request for change.
“I am a friend of many progressives here in Amador County, and what they have always found that I am reasonable and I am willing to listen,” said Redman. “My Democratic friends have come out and said:” We support you, Gary. This is common sense. We are tired of California and the way California goes where they continue to rise to criminals. “
