Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google after it changed the label for the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its map platform to coincide with the executive order of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to amend the name of the water body, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum said at a press conference that the demand had presented the leg against the technological giant, without providing additional details.
The demand occurs after Sheinbaum threatened in February to sue Google for the change of name.

“We are going to wait. We are seeing, observing what this would mean from the perspective of legal advice, but we hope they do a review,” Sheinbaum at that time.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also sent letters previously to Google by urging the ocean basin such as the Gulf of America.
Trump signed an order on his first day at the White House in January to change the name of the northern part of the Gulf to the Gulf of America. The water body has shared borders between the United States and Mexico, and Trump’s order only has authority within the United States.

Mexico has argued that the Gulf label of America should only be applied to the part on the United States continental platform. The United States has control over approximately 46% of the Gulf, Mexico, controls approximately 49% and Cuba controls approximately 5%, according to the sovereign limits, a database of international limits.
“What Google is doing here is to change the name of the continental platform of Mexico and Cuba, which has nothing to do with Trump’s decree, which was applied only to the United States continental platform,” said Sheinbaum in February.
The Gulf appears in Google Maps such as the Gulf of America within the United States, such as the Gulf of Mexico within Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) anywhere else. The Gulf of Mexico had been called for more than 400 years.

Google Maps was using the Gulf of America for users in the United States shortly after Trump’s order, citing his “long data practice” of following the leadership of the United States government in these matters. In cases where official names vary among countries, Google’s policy says users will see their official local names.
In February, the Mexican President shared a response from the Vice President of Government and Public Policies of Google, Cris Turner, who said the company would not change IT’s policy after Trump’s order.
Sheinbaum’s announcement of demand occurs after the Republicans of the House of Representatives approved the Law of the Gulf of America in a 211-206 vote, marking the first step to encode Trump’s order. The legislation is now addressed to the Senate.
