The National Transport Security Board (NTSB) announced on Sunday that it would launch a “IR” team to Brooklyn bridge after a Mexican Navy navigation ship crashed into the Milestone of New York City, killing at least two people on board.
The United States government agency in charge of investigating important transport accidents did not sacrifice more information about the “GO team” on Saturday’s bridge, but said soon.
The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, whose last update on the accident reached midnight, said the high ship of the Mexican Navy Cuauhtémoc “lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn bridge.”
“At this time, from 277 on board, 19 injuries suffered, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly died of their injuries,” the mayor wrote in X at 12:18 am

Adams said at that time that a preliminary investigation showed that the bridge suffered “without damage” and that the milestone “is now open to the public.”
“We are praying for all on board and their families and we are grateful to our first response that quickly jumped to action, ensuring that this accident was not much worse,” he took the morning of Sunday.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she lamented the death of two crew members who “lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in the port of New York.”
“Our solidarity and support are with their families,” wrote 1:15 am in X. “The Secretariat of the Navy, with the support of local authorities, is attending to the injured. The Mexican ambassador to the United personnel and the staff of the Mexico Consulate”
He also thanked Adams for his support.
The Mexican Navy said that on Saturday that the ship was a training ship of the academy. The incident occurred the duration of the “output maneuver” a duration of an instructional cruise entitled “Bicentennial of the consolidation of independence in the sea”.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. The ship would be supposed to leave New York city on its way to Iceland at the time of the accident.

In a scene captured in multiple videos of eyewitnesses, the ship, which was flying a large Mexican flag, could be seen traveling quickly to the bridge near the Brooklyn side of the East River. Then, its three masts reached the span of the bridge and broke, one by one, while the ship continued to move. The videos showed heavy traffic on the period at the time of the collision of 8:20 pm. No one on the bridge was reported injured.

The sailors could be seen in the rigging of the damaged masts, but, notably, no one fell into the water, the authorities said.
The Cuauhtémoc, about 297 feet long and 40 feet wide, according to the Mexican Navy, sailed for the first time in 1982. The main mast of the ship has a height of 160 feet, according to the Mexican government. Each year, the Cuauhtémoc is established at the end of the classes at the Naval Military School to finish the training of the cadets. This year he left the Mexican port of Acapulco on the Pacific coast on April 6, according to the Mexican Navy.
He arrived in New York City on May 13, where visitors were welcome for several days, said the Mexican consulate. The ship was scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 nations for 254 days, 170 of them at sea.

It was not clear what caused the ship to fill the course. The special operations chief of the New York Police Department, Wilson Arboles, said the ship had just left a Manhattan dock and was supposed to go to the sea, not to the bridge.
He said that an initial report was that the ship’s pilot had lost energy due to a mechanical problem, although officials warned that the information was preliminary. The videos show that a tugboat was near Cuauhtémoc at the time of the accident.
The Brooklyn bridge, which opened in 1883, has a main section of almost 1,600 feet supported by two masonry towers. More than 100,000 vehicles and an estimated 32,000 pedestrians intersect every day, according to the city’s transport department. His catwalk is a great tourist attraction.
The traffic stopped after the collision, but it was allowed to resume after an inspection, city officials said.

When midnight approached, the broken boat slowly moved through the East River, going down and beyond the Manhattan bridge, assistant to a series of tugs, before catching in a dock.
