Northvolt co-founder Paolo Cerruti has announced his decision to step down as CEO of Northvolt North America while retaining his position as Chairman of the Board for the company’s Canadian entity.
During this transition, Karen Chang, who has extensive experience within Northvolt’s ecosystem and has been instrumental in the Northvolt Six project in Quebec, will take on the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO). She will collaborate closely with Jose Diaz, who will assume the position of Interim Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Chang, a long-time member of Northvolt, has played a key role in navigating the complexities of the Northvolt Six project and is well-positioned to lead the team during this period. Diaz, known for his expertise in managing large-scale construction projects, will focus on ensuring the continued smooth execution of operations.
Cerruti, while stepping away from daily executive responsibilities, will continue to support the company’s growth from a strategic standpoint. He conveyed full confidence in Chang and Diaz, highlighting their deep understanding of the project and commitment to its success. He emphasized that their leadership would be crucial in maintaining momentum as the search for a permanent CEO moves forward, noting that dedication, vision, and resilience would be essential qualities in the company’s next leader.
Reflecting on his tenure, Cerruti stated that leading the team and working with partners had been an honor. He expressed pride in the Northvolt North America team, crediting their expertise and passion for the project’s success. He acknowledged the challenges they had overcome together and emphasized that the groundwork had been laid for a strong and sustainable future. While stepping into an advisory role, he affirmed his commitment to working closely with the team to ensure the continued success of Northvolt’s expansion in North America.
