Berkshire vice president, Greg Abel, speaks with the duration of the shareholders of the annual shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., in Omaha, Nebraska, US
When Greg Abel happens to Warren Buffett at the head of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of this year, culture is expected to preserve in the giant, even if it does not coincide with the stellar power of its legendary boss.
Abel, 62, now vice president of Berkshire, is expected by investors and analysts to defend the history of the conglomeration of $ 1.18 billion to invest in long -term companies and avoid the dividends payments to the shareholders.
Berkshire, owner of railroads, insurance companies and an ice cream manufacturer, has been planning the 94 -year -old buffet, who has directed the company since 1965, is no longer there.
Even so, it was a surprise when Buffett announced on Saturday that Abel should replace him as executive director. The Olaha of Omaha had not pointed out before a clear intention about when to turn aside.
Buffett has alluded to his advanced age, and before announcing his planned departure at the annual Berkshire shareholders meeting in Omaha, he pointed out that Abel was more up to work than him.
“It is working much better with Greg Abel than with me, because I don’t want to work as hard as he works,” Buffett said.
An interrogator asked Abel what would be his management approach to subsidiaries. “More active,” he replied.
Abel also praised Buffett, saying that “Warren has obviously led a remarkable teacher, and I have benefited from that for years.”
A man of detail man
Gregory Edward Abel was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 1, 1962, from a working class family.
Working in strange jobs, clean discarded bottles and full fire exugators, according to the distinguished Horaths Association of distinguished Americans, a non -profit organization of education that honored Abel in 2018.
“It was a true family of the working class where people sometimes had work and sometimes,” Abel said about his childhood in a video posted on the Alger Horathio website. “You realized that we were all working hard to try to advance to our family.”
Abel graduated in 1984 from Alberta University and worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Calenergy energy firm.
He joined Berkshire Hathaway Energy, then known as Midamerican Energy, in 1992, which Berkshire then delivered, and became the head of Midamerican in 2008.
Abel now Berkshire’s not sure operations of Abel, such as BNSF, Berkshire Hathaway Energy and deans of chemical, industrial and retail operations.
In the last year he also has tasks about some of the capital allocation responsibilities that had been Buffett.
Buffett said last year that Abel will have a last word about decisions about the Berkshire public actions portfolio, a work that was previously thought that others would be left.
Many executives who work with Abel call him a perceptual interrogator that closely analyzes financial metrics and wants to understand companies closely and how they are administered.
Abel’s questions “Be sure to be thinking about the directives and plans such as a company,” said Chris Kelly, executive director of Homeservices of America, the largest residential real estate broker in the United States. “You come smart to have a conversation with him.”
