The Department of Transportation (DOT) is halting funding for two of New York City’s biggest infrastructure projects — the Hudson Tunnel and the Second Avenue Subway — freezing nearly $18 billion in federal money. Vice President JD Vance, pressed on the impact of funding cuts to New York City, defended Republicans’ approach to the shutdown. “We want to do everything that we can to help the American people. But when the Democrats shut down the government, we have to actually do a little triage to make sure the most critical and most essential services are provided,” Vance told reporters at…
Beef prices are at a record high in the wake of a drought that left cattle inventory at the lowest level in 70 years amid strong demand, resulting in price increases for steak and ground beef. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index report for August showed a surge in beef prices over the past year. Ground beef prices were up 12.8% on a year-over-year basis in August, while beef roasts were up 13.6%, and steak prices were 16.6% higher. Those inflation figures are well above the 3.2% year-over-year rise in all food categories, as well as the 5.4% rise…
New York City’s suburban housing markets are reportedly seeing a surge in demand as the mayoral race heads toward the Nov. 4 election, with Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani leading in the polls. Mamdani’s housing platform — which includes a rent freeze and higher taxes on top earners — reportedly has some New Yorkers turning to the suburbs. Zach and Heather Harrison, real estate agents in the affluent Westchester County, said calls from Manhattan residents spiked after Mamdani’s Democratic primary win in June, according to Realtor.com. IS A MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING MARKET ON THE HORIZON? “We are absolutely seeing a correlation…
If raising console prices wasn’t enough to scare you away, Microsoft has also increased the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate by 50 percent. That makes the subscription cost $30 per month when it used to be $20. Even if it comes with more games and the benefits of a Fortnite Crew subscription, you wouldn’t be wrong for wanting to cancel. Cancelling means you’ll also lose ability to play online multiplayer games, but cheaper tiers of Game Pass received new benefits without getting a similar price hike, so downgrading might be worth considering. Whichever you choose, the process of managing…

The first time a Pennsylvania consultant named Charles Sowell connected with border czar Tom Homan was when Sowell reached out on LinkedIn in 2021, looking for advice about border contracting work. Homan had finished a stint as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, capping a three-decade career in federal government. He and Sowell built a rapport, based partly on their shared criticisms of then-President Joe Biden’s border policies. By…
Stephanie Strong, CEO & Marianna Zaslavsky, the (relatively new) Head of Growth at Boulder Care came on THCB to tell Matthew Holt about their service which delivers medication assisted treatment for those suffering from substance used disorder, via telehealth. Marianna joined this summer with the goal of helping patients get access via managed care plans. We discussed a lot about the potential for…
I’m grateful to live in a time where soup season is celebrated by so many. Not only because soup is delicious, but because it is so amazingly easy. The shared feeling of coziness and sheer volume of incredible flavors is just one of the many by-products of fall, and with a loaf of crusty bread, you have dinner ready is less than an hour. And of course, leftovers can be easily reheated—they’re often even better the next day. To kick off soup season, I’m starting with this Miso Sweet Potato Soup. It’s sweet, a little savory, and warming to your…
