Berlin (AP) – The German police in Colonia arrested five French on Sunday and a Belgian woman who had tried to climb the famous city’s cathedral.
Police said they were informed by church security guards who saw young escalators with headlights in their surveillance cameras in the middle of the night.
Police officers with riot team surrounded the cathedral and a helicopter hovered on the northern dome, until the five climbers stopped inside the tower staircase. The authorities said the men were between 18 and 27, the woman was 26 years old. Their identities were not revealed in line with the German privacy rules.
Police confiscated a camera, a cell phone and a locking selection. Duration of their search for the building, discovered several doors that had broken equipment and backpacks containing climbing equipment.
The double protest cathedral is a tourist attraction and one of the oldest and most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in northern Europe. It is considered the most famous worship house in Germany.
