Berkeley – Berkeley’s police shot a man allegedly armed with a firearm outside an apartment on Sunday morning after threatening to shoot the officers, police said.
The police were sent around 6:50 am on Sunday to a possible incident of domestic violence after a woman was reported that shouted help inside a residence in the 1700 block of University Avenue, according to Berkeley Police spokeswoman Jessica Perry.
The man “threatened to shoot the officers and left an apartment with a gun,” Perry said. After a confrontation and negotiations, the man left the apartment again with a firearm, and the police shot him, Perry said.
He was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to Perry.
The investigation is being installed, and the police asked the public on Sunday to avoid the area around the university and McGee avenues.
The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative license, according to a departmental protocol, Perry said.
The Alameda County District Prosecutor’s Office is also carrying out an investigation into the incident, said Perry.
