The actor Eric Dane, 52, revealed this week that he has diagnosed bone with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or disease.
“I have diagnosed Bone. I am grateful to have my beloved family by my side as we sail for this next chapter,” the “Euphoria” star and “Gray’s Anatomy” said Thursday in a statement to the people.
Together with his wife or two decades, Rebecca Gayheart, 53, Dane has two children, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
“I feel lucky that I can continue working and I am anxious to return to the euphoria set next week,” he added. “Please, I ask you to give my family and this time the duration of privacy.”
How does it cause?
According to Medicine Johns Hopkins, ALS, a fatal and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Known as Lou Hrig’s disease in honor of the famous baseball player who died from the disease, since it indriminously affects all genres and races, he thought it is a bit more common in men than in women.
The typical age of diagnosis is between 40 and 70, but can occur before.
There are two main types or as: sporadic and family.
So sporadic is the most common form of the disease, which represents 90% of all cases. Sporadic is produced at random without genetic cause or family history.
On the contrary, around 5-10% or cases are familiar, which means that two or more people in a family have AS. These cases are caused by several inherited factors. The most common is in a gene called SOD1.
The specific risk factors have not been conclusively identified, but the research is exploring the role of genetics and environmental factors in the development of the ELA. The investigation has suggested that smoking tobacco can increase the risk of a person for AS.
Life expectancy
People fighting the disease usually live between three and five years after diagnosis. However, many patients with so much exceed these numbers.
The AS association reports that approximately 10% of people diagnosed with AS live at least 10 more years, while around 5% live at least 20 years or more. An outstanding example is the physicist Stephen Hawking, who lived as for more than 50 years after his diagnosis.
In his statement, Dane did not share when he was diagnosed.
What are the symptoms or if?
Initially, as can occur as a speech dragged, difficulty swallowing and/or weakness of the limbs that persist for several days or weeks. As does not affect the senses or cognitive function.
As the disease progresses, common symptoms grow to include:
- Muscle stiffness, cramps or contractions, particularly in the limbs
- Motor control loss in hands and arms
- Severe fatigue
- About speech and difficulty projecting the voice
- Difficulty using arms and legs
- Stumbling and falling
- Facial fabric
- Uncontrollable periods of laughing or crying
- Difficulty breathing and swallowing
- Partial to total paralysis
For most IF patients, the disease will advance in the course of 3 to 5 years, which prevents voluntarily from moving arms and legs. For others, the decrease accelerates more or less.
The disease finally paralyzes the necessary muscles to move, speak, eat and breathe. To most patients, for respiratory failure.
How is it diagnosed?
Although there is no specific test for diagnosis, since suppliers often order evaluations such as magnetic resonance exploration, spinal touch, muscle or nervous biopsy, and/or electrodiagnostic tests to rule out other conditions.
Is it as a treatable?
There is no known cure for ELA. The treatment consists of managing symptoms and can include physical, occupational, respiratory, swirl and nutritional therapies.
You can use a fan for those who experience deterioration of the diaphragm and difficulty breathing.
In the summer of 2014, the “Ice Cubes Challenge”, viral on social networks, with innumerable celebrities that were presented with an icy water bucket on their heads. The campaign aimed to raise awareness and encourage donations to finance research for treatments.
The FDA has approved the drugs Riluzol, Edavarona and Phenylbutirate/Taurursodiol of sodium for use in the improvement of short -term survival and the detainee of the physical decrease in patients with ELA.
Celebrities with themselves
As affects about 30,000 Americans.
In addition to Eric Dane and Stephen Hawking, other people celebrated who have suffered from AS include Aaron Lazar, John Driskell Hopkins, Eric Stevens, Joe Bonsall, Roberta Flack and Kenneth Mitchell.
