Austin stated, “U.S. military forces conducted self-defense strikes on two facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups today at President Biden’s direction.” These targeted self-defense operations are in reaction to a slew of continuous, largely fruitless attacks that Iranian-backed militia groups launched on October 17 against U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Syria.”
The crisis in Israel is causing tensions in the region to rise, which coincides with the U.S. military action. Austin stated that the assaults do not signify a change in the U.S. strategy towards the conflict and that they are “separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.”
According to defense sources, drones and missiles assaulted American and coalition personnel in Iraq and Syria at least 19 times between October 17 and Thursday. U.S. Central Command said that on October 18, at least two one-way attack drones targeted the al-Tanf military facility in southern Syria. Two distinct drone strikes against American and coalition forces based at al-Asad base in western Iraq occurred on the same day.
A defense official said on Friday that there had been another attack in Iraq, stating that American forces had taken down a one-way drone “a few kilometers” away from the al-Asad facility.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the head of Iran, was forewarned by Biden during a news conference on Wednesday that if forces connected to Iran “continue to move against [U.S.] troops, we will respond, and he should be prepared.” Israel is not involved in any way.”
The two areas were a weapons storage area and an ammunition storage area, according to a senior U.S. military official, and the U.S. utilized precision munitions dropped by two F-16s.
According to the official, American and Israeli coordination over the strikes was lacking.
According to American authorities, the country is currently assessing the combat damage and is unable to say for sure whether any Iranians were present or whether any casualties were caused by the attacks.

The Pentagon press secretary, Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, stated on Tuesday that Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are supporting the organizations carrying out the attacks.
“We will never hesitate to take action when necessary to protect our forces and our interests overseas, and we always reserve the right to defend ourselves.”
